How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare on the BOL: “Floating smoke pots, military, boxed, no igniting devices; NMFC 161320, Class 70–85.” This prevents hazmat misflags and reclass.
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes with inner padding so fuel blocks do not rub or shift; add a poly liner to contain dust or residue during transit.
- Apply clear exterior markings such as “No Igniting Devices Included” and “Training/Signal Supply” to reduce carrier inspections and delays.
- Palletize multiple cartons in a tight pattern, strap and wrap; keep labels visible on two sides for quick base or depot receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special handling fees, lowering LTL costs on repeat shipments.
- Defined NMFC class range (70–85) and boxed packaging improve stowability, helping secure predictable rates and fewer reweigh/reclass charges.
- Accurate labeling and documentation speed carrier handoffs and military base gate entry, reducing detention and delivery uncertainty.
- Damage-minimizing pack methods cut claim risk on fuel block contents, protecting margins for defense suppliers and training contractors.
