Notes

Note 161802: NOTE-When shipments consist of newspapers having a value greater than the value at time of circulation, shipper must certify on shipping order and bill of lading at time of shipment the following: "The value of the newspapers is hereby stated by the shipper to be greater than the value at time of circulation." ________________________________________ (Shipper's Signature)

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the product fits: newspapers wholly or partly printed and shipped as packages. Reference Note item 161802 for any special definitions or exceptions.
  2. Tight-pack each package: compress stacks, strap securely, and overwrap with poly to limit moisture and ink rub. Add kraft paper or corrugate slips to prevent scuffing.
  3. Identify clearly: mark edition/date, piece counts, and weights on each package. Keep package dimensions consistent to improve handling and stacking.
  4. If palletizing packages, use flat, undamaged pallets, corner boards, and stretch wrap. Cap with a top sheet and keep total height reasonable (often under 48 in) for LTL stability.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and quoting—no density calculation needed, reducing reclass risk and improving cost predictability.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and scheduling, helping meet tight publication deadlines and distribution windows.
  • Durable packaging minimizes damage from edge crush, ink transfer, and humidity, lowering claims and protecting subscriber satisfaction and ad value.
  • Standardized packages flow faster through cross-docks, cutting handling time and limiting accessorials tied to rework or repackaging.
