How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Printed matter, exchange value, NMFC 161850, boxed,” and include piece counts per carton for clear receiving.
- Pack coupons or certificates in tight, banded bundles inside sturdy cartons; add void fill and use tamper-evident tape to deter pilferage.
- Palletize cartons square to the deck, shrink-wrap with corner boards, and avoid labels that advertise monetary value on the exterior.
- Confirm whether your shipment fits notes for items 161852 or 161854 (e.g., prepaid certificates vs. coupons) before tendering to an LTL carrier.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC use minimizes reclass and rebill risk, protecting campaign budgets tied to coupons and redemption programs.
- Boxed printed matter cubes efficiently and stacks well, often reducing LTL rates through better pallet density and stability.
- Secure, tamper-evident packing lowers loss exposure on exchange-value documents, improving claim outcomes and insurance confidence.
- Streamlined cartonized handling speeds transit from print floor to distribution, helping time-sensitive promotions hit market windows.
