How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the freight as metal pallet or warehouse racks, NOI, packaged; list parts such as uprights, step beams, braces, and wire decks on the BOL.
- Bundle beams and braces tightly with steel banding; cap sharp ends, add edge protectors, and stretch wrap. Crate or box bolts, footplates, and anchors so small items do not escape.
- Palletize long members on sturdy skids; support 8-12 ft uprights along their length, keep fork openings clear, add blocking to prevent rolling, and mark Do Not Stack where needed.
- Measure the longest bundle and overall stacked height, record piece counts, and note any mixed materials (metal with wood or plastic) since this NOI permits components of other materials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI mapping reduces carrier reclass and inspection fees, helping avoid surprise invoices and dispute time.
- Packaged coverage for mixed-material rack kits lets you ship uprights, beams, and hardware together, lowering handling and pickup costs.
- Stronger bundling and end protection cut damage on long steel members, keeping warehouse buildouts and store resets on schedule.
- Clear packaging details speed quoting and dock throughput, improving rate shopping across LTL carriers for 3PLs and distributors.
