Notes

Note 164393: NOTE-Applies on containment systems or structures for storing or holding shopping carts in parking lots.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the correct sub-item before booking: vehicle-mounted carriers use 164395/164396, cart corrals use 164393, and spice racks see 164394. Use 164390 for general racks, stands, displays, and wire decking packaged in boxes, crates, or packages.
  2. Calculate density to determine class per Item 170. Example: a 48×40×24 in crate at 160 lb equals 16 cu ft and 10 PCF (160/16), driving the applicable class.
  3. Package by design and material: use corner boards, edge protectors, and steel/plastic banding for iron or steel wire decking; use interior padding and segregated hardware bags for countertop organizers or spice racks.
  4. Palletize to the footprint with no overhang, add a top sheet for crush resistance, wrap tightly, and label “This Side Up” for items like dishwashers or shower units shipped in boxes or crates.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based ratings let you lower freight spend by improving pack density through nesting racks, tighter cartons, or right-sizing crates.
  • A broad, inclusive item streamlines routing for diverse SKUs (display racks, wire shelving, bag stands), reducing reclass fees and disputes.
  • Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier selection and minimizes compliance delays, accelerating dock-to-dock cycle times.
  • Clear packaging pathways (boxes, crates, packages) cut damage claims, improve delivered quality, and support better rate negotiations with carriers.
