How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 164435 at Class 150 when rating and list commodity as molded plastic auto transmission shipping rack on the BOL for clean audits.
- Palletize racks on 48x40 or OEM skids, add a slip sheet top and bottom, then stretch-wrap and band in two places; mark fork entry sides for safer handling.
- When shipping empty, nest racks to shrink cube and note quantities per pallet on paperwork, e.g., 12 nested per pallet to prevent reweigh disputes.
- Apply this item for empty racks; if racks are loaded with transmissions, rate by the transmission commodity NMFC, not the rack classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 150 removes density calculations and reduces reclass risks.
- Lower claims: molded plastic cradles protect components, reducing abrasion and transit damage.
- Returnable asset efficiency: clear labeling enables closed-loop reuse, cutting expendable packaging costs.
- Fewer accessorials: non-hazardous and stackable nesting can reduce handling time and accessorial fees.
