How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package rag pulp in tight, uniform bundles or bales, then palletize and band with edge protection to prevent slippage and fiber scuffing.
- Verify NMFC item notes to determine class 65 vs 70; tightly secured, durable packages often qualify for the lower class, while looser packs may rate higher.
- Guard against moisture and odor absorption: use slip sheets and top covers, avoid damp trailers, and segregate from perfumed or oily freight.
- Label clearly as “Rag Pulp, in packages,” list bundle count and pallet count, and include buyer-required specs like moisture content when applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correctly selecting class 65–70 reduces reclass charges and unexpected invoice adjustments.
- Pallet-ready packaged pulp speeds dock turns and decreases detention, improving throughput for mills and converters.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies routing and avoids hazmat accessorials, trimming total landed cost.
- Consistent packaging improves cube utilization and claim prevention, supporting better LTL rates and fewer damages.
