How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender as NMFC 165350, Class 85. Note the specific body type (cinder, slag, ladle, dump, etc.) and steel construction on the BOL.
- Build a rigid cradle or heavy skids that match the car body's support points; bolt or band through lift lugs and add edge guards to protect flanges.
- Mark center of gravity and lift points clearly; arrange a crane or high-capacity forklift and request open-deck equipment or LTL with side-access where needed.
- Provide full dimensions, verified weight, and piece count; request tarping or rust inhibitor paper for mill-fresh steel to control corrosion in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 across multiple rail body styles simplifies quoting and auditing, reducing reclass disputes.
- Non-density classification prevents reweigh-driven class changes on bulky steel fabrications, curbing surprise charges.
- Proper cradling and blocking protect rims, weldments, and linings, cutting claims and avoiding costly shop rework.
- Clear handling notes (lift points, CG, crane) shorten loading times and limit detention and failed-pickup fees.
