How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize brake shoes and parts tightly, with friction faces separated by corrugated pads; band with steel or heavy-duty poly and stretch-wrap for containment.
- Load dense shoes low and centered on the pallet; block and brace to prevent shift. Example: 40–60 shoes per pallet can approach 1,200–1,800 lb.
- Use crates or metal bins for loose small parts and keep hardware in labeled bags to avoid loss and simplify receiving.
- Print NMFC 165570, Class 50 on the BOL and labels, and avoid mixing with lighter freight that could change stowability or trigger rework.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating streamlines quoting and rating in TMS systems, reducing reclass risk and dispute time.
- Dense metal components qualify for a low class, driving more competitive LTL rates and better $/CWT on heavy pallets.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions, expanding carrier options and lowering accessorial costs.
- Rugged parts tolerate floor-loaded or palletized moves, improving cube utilization and allowing stackable configurations when protected correctly.
