How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 165590 and describe the pieces on the BOL, for example: Eight steel brake shoes banded to a 48x40 pallet, Class 70, NOI steel.
  2. Unitize heavy parts on a 4-way pallet or in a timber crate. Band with steel or heavy polyester strap, add edge protectors, and use a top cap to prevent abrasion.
  3. Protect machined faces with caps and VCI wrap or paper. Keep surfaces dry and clean; avoid oily residue and clearly state no liquids included to prevent hazmat confusion.
  4. Distribute weight evenly and block inside the crate to stop shift. Bundle long shoes or discs into strapped sets to eliminate pinch points and improve forklift handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 for NOI steel parts delivers predictable LTL rates and faster quotes.
  • Clear NMFC mapping reduces reclass disputes and accessorial surprises at delivery.
  • Proper palletization minimizes handling damage, cutting claim risk and turnaround time for critical rail spares.
  • Fits common LTL and intermodal transfers, streamlining depot-to-yard replenishment and lowering total logistics cost.
