How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 165590 and describe the pieces on the BOL, for example: Eight steel brake shoes banded to a 48x40 pallet, Class 70, NOI steel.
- Unitize heavy parts on a 4-way pallet or in a timber crate. Band with steel or heavy polyester strap, add edge protectors, and use a top cap to prevent abrasion.
- Protect machined faces with caps and VCI wrap or paper. Keep surfaces dry and clean; avoid oily residue and clearly state no liquids included to prevent hazmat confusion.
- Distribute weight evenly and block inside the crate to stop shift. Bundle long shoes or discs into strapped sets to eliminate pinch points and improve forklift handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 for NOI steel parts delivers predictable LTL rates and faster quotes.
- Clear NMFC mapping reduces reclass disputes and accessorial surprises at delivery.
- Proper palletization minimizes handling damage, cutting claim risk and turnaround time for critical rail spares.
- Fits common LTL and intermodal transfers, streamlining depot-to-yard replenishment and lowering total logistics cost.
