How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the cab shell including roof overhangs and handrails, mark center of gravity, and share lifting diagrams so carriers can plan cranes or spreader bars.
- Mount the cab to an engineered steel skid with bolted tie-downs, blocking, and cross-bracing; use fork pockets or designated sling points to prevent crushing.
- Protect glazing, controls, and wiring harnesses with rigid corner boards, foam-in-place, and moisture barriers; add tilt/shock indicators for handling accountability.
- List NMFC 165650 on the BOL and note non-hazardous; request step-deck or curtain-side service with tarping, and add “Do Not Stack” and “Lift From Skid Only” labels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC 165650 usage reduces reclass/rebill risk and helps secure cleaner spot quotes for oversized railway components.
- Engineered crating and bracing cut damage rates, avoiding costly rework and downtime for locomotive rebuilds or fleet overhauls.
- Clear rigging and lift instructions shorten loading time, lowering accessorials like detention and improving carrier acceptance.
- Consistent documentation (dimensions, CG, packaging photos) improves insurer confidence and speeds claims resolution if issues arise.
