How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “NMFC 165670 – Car Doors, NOI, aluminum; Class 100.” Note that these are railway/railcar doors to avoid auto-parts misclassification.
- Package vertically on padded A‑frames or in reinforced crates with edge guards and foam; band to a pallet and mark “Do Not Clamp.” Avoid stacking and protect latch/hinge areas.
- Provide exact pieces and overall footprint for routing; long or wide doors may require straps and corner protectors. Share photos of the packed unit to speed carrier acceptance.
- For plant or MRO deliveries, request inside, appointment, or liftgate service as needed, and tag any glass panels or windows so handlers keep those sections upright.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100 (not density-based) reduces reclasses, inspections, and surprise rebills.
- Proper Railway Group identification prevents mix-ups with automotive doors, avoiding delays and incorrect rates.
- Aluminum construction cuts weight versus steel, often allowing more units per skid and improved cost per door.
- Straightforward NMFC description streamlines quotes for railcar OEMs and maintenance shops, supporting tighter budgets and reliable ETAs.
