How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 165690 on the BOL and describe the freight as “steel car retarders or parts” to prevent miscoding as generic steel hardware.
- Palletize or crate heavy steel segments; add edge protectors and at least two steel bands per axis, with blocking to stop rolling or shifting.
- For long retarder bars, bundle by length with hardwood dunnage and forkliftable spacers; request liftgate or forklift-capable pickup when docks aren’t available.
- Apply light oil or VCI wrap to bare steel if storage is expected; cover with weatherproof sheeting to guard against corrosion between yard transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces reclass fees on dense steel components.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines booking and avoids extra compliance steps or hazmat surcharges.
- One code for complete assemblies and parts simplifies procurement and consolidates shipments across rail projects.
- Proper unitization (pallets/crates) speeds cross-dock handling, lowering claim risk and minimizing detention or redelivery costs.
