How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Build rigid skids or A‑frame racks for long, thin steel roof panels; add edge guards, dunnage, and tight banding to prevent flexing and metal‑to‑metal rub.
- Protect bare steel from corrosion with VCI wrap or poly plus desiccants, then cap with corrugated sheets; label Keep Dry and Do Not Top‑Load.
- For LTL, aim for consolidated bundles that fit standard handling (e.g., 48x96 in footprints) and coordinate overlength handling or side-load service when pieces exceed norms.
- State the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Car roofs, KD or roof parts, steel, NOI – NMFC 165710, Class 50, non-hazardous,” and include piece counts and skid dimensions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower shipping spend from a fixed Class 50 rating on dense steel parts, often yielding better per‑pound LTL rates than higher classes.
- Simple, non‑density classification reduces quote friction and reclass penalties when paperwork and packaging match the NMFC description.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, streamlining tendering and transit.
- Durable racks and corrosion control lower claim risk and rework costs, keeping railcar production or refurbishment schedules on track.
