How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify whether you’re sending a complete car body or a major railcar assembly, then select the appropriate class break within 85–125; list NMFC 165800 and note “boxed” or “crated” on the BOL.
- Engineer rigid crates with bolted skids and internal blocking for heavy points (e.g., couplers, side frames, door modules). Add corrosion wrap for steel components and close with lag screws, not nails.
- Mark lift points, center of gravity, and fork entry sides on every crate. Provide carriers with handling instructions if slings or spreader bars are required for oversized railcar sections.
- Document piece counts and exterior dimensions of each box/crate, include photos of the packout, and attach a packing list so carrier inspections align with the selected class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate class selection (85–125) minimizes reclass fees and keeps LTL quotes aligned with actual invoices.
- Purpose-built crates reduce transit damage to high-value railcar assemblies, lowering claim exposure and downtime for rail operations.
- Fixed class (not density-based) simplifies multi-carrier bidding and speeds up rate comparison for planned maintenance shipments.
- Clear packaging and labeling streamline cross-dock handling, improving delivery reliability to depots and rail yards.
