How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize the wheeled unit: block all four wheels with nailed cleats, strap through the frame or axle points, and stretch-wrap to the pallet. Add “Do Not Roll” labels.
- Protect discharge components: keep the safety pin in place, cap the nozzle or horn, pad the hose reel, and shield gauges with foam or corrugated guards.
- Mind the center of gravity: ship cylinders upright, apply two straps minimum with corner boards so bands don’t dent the shell, and mark “This Side Up.”
- For depots shipping multiples, stage two carts nose-to-tail on a 48x48 skid with wheel chocks and cross-bracing, or use a tall crate with wheel channels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and minimizes reclass risk—no density math or packaging tiers to manage.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, accelerating tendering and pickup windows.
- Railway-specific listing supports standardized procurement and warranty returns for transit agencies and yard maintenance crews.
- Lower damage rates on cylinders and valves reduce claims and downtime, keeping emergency response equipment ready and budgets on track.
