How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain fuel and oil from the gasoline motor, cap all ports, and bag breathers so the unit qualifies as non-hazardous before packing.
- Pack knocked-down components in sturdy boxes or plywood crates with blocking and foam fill; label orientation and keep heavy parts low to prevent tip-overs.
- Mount boxes or crates to a pallet with banding and corner protectors; ensure forklift openings and mark center of gravity for safe handling.
- On the BOL, write: “Gasoline motor, NOI, KD, boxed/crated, NMFC 165820, Class 85” and list piece count to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating eliminates density calculations, streamlining quotes and preventing surprise reclass charges.
- Knocked-down packaging reduces cube and damage risk, lowering claims and improving delivery performance across LTL networks.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and accessorials, shortening tender times and reducing total landed cost.
- Standard boxes or crates are cross-dock friendly, improving carrier acceptance and interline compatibility for faster routing.
