How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the correct NMFC subclass (77.5 or 100) based on how the carbody is prepared and secured, and print the exact item/sub number on the BOL.
- Provide engineering-level specs: overall length, width, height, weight, center of gravity, lifting points, and photos or drawings to help carriers plan cranes and equipment.
- Prepare the carbody: drain fluids, cap lines, remove loose fittings, protect couplers and corners, and mount in timber or steel cradles with chain tie-downs and edge protection.
- Match equipment to the load: book extendable flatbeds or multi-axle lowboys, arrange cranes or SPMTs, confirm permits/escorts if over-dimension, and schedule load/unload windows.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Two defined classes (77.5–100) simplify quoting and avoid density disputes, accelerating carrier confirmations.
- Correct subclassing can lower linehaul and minimize reclass fees, improving cost predictability on oversized moves.
- Non-hazardous status reduces compliance steps and mitigates accessorials tied to hazmat handling or documentation.
- Professional blocking and securement reduce damage risk and detention at origin, keeping project timelines and budgets intact.
