How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item as “Crossovers, railway track, iron or steel – NMFC 166130, Class 50” on the BOL, and include piece count, longest length, and required loading method (forklift or crane).
- Bundle long rails and crossover assemblies with steel banding on timber dunnage; cap sharp ends, use edge protectors, and mark Do Not Stack if geometry prevents stable stacking.
- Match equipment to length: use LTL van service for segments under 12–14 ft; choose flatbed for longer or awkward assemblies and request tarps to limit corrosion on bare steel.
- Balance bundles for safe handling, indicate center of gravity and lifting points, and keep skids wide enough for forklift tines to avoid damage and delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 keeps dense steel trackwork economical, improving cost-per-pound for rail contractors and MOW suppliers.
- Simple, non-density rating speeds quoting and dispatch, reducing admin time across multi-stop rail construction projects.
- Accurate BOL details and proper bundling help avoid reclass, overlength, and handling accessorials that inflate freight spend.
- Correct classification aligns the right equipment the first time, protecting schedules for track outages and yard installations.
