How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Build a full-length skid with cradle blocks to support the gate arm end-to-end; use soft webbing and edge guards, and mark the package “Do Not Stack.”
- Protect reflective sheeting and tip hardware with foam and corrugated wrap; cap both ends, and strap any small mounting parts in a labeled box to the skid.
- List “Railway safety gates – NMFC 166810 – Class 77.5 – Non-haz” on the BOL; confirm long-freight handling if any piece exceeds 96–120 inches.
- Book appointment deliveries for rail yards, signal shops, or public works depots; verify 53' trailer access and liftgate needs where docks aren’t available.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 (no density) delivers predictable LTL quotes and minimizes reclass or inspection fees.
- Damage-smart crating/palletizing reduces claims and avoids costly delays when crossings are awaiting replacement arms.
- Combining multiple gate arms on one reinforced skid cuts handling touches and can lower accessorials per unit.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
