How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book using NMFC item 166830 at Class 100, and list packaging as cartons or crates on the BOL for packaged tank car gauges.
- Protect precision faces and stems with foam-in-place or molded trays, add desiccants, and use rigid double-wall cartons; avoid loose fill that allows movement.
- Palletize away from heavy hardware like valves or couplings; add corner guards, band securely, shrink-wrap, and place “Precision Instrument” and orientation arrows on all sides.
- Include part IDs and calibration certificates in a waterproof pouch on the exterior; request “Do Not Stack” or top-cap if gauges have protruding assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable LTL rates without density calculations, simplifying bids for rail shops and OEMs.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, widening carrier options and lowering accessorial risk.
- Accurate NMFC on the BOL reduces reclass and rebill exposure, protecting margins and transit timelines.
- Purposeful packaging guidance cuts damage claims on sensitive gauge assemblies, minimizing downtime for tank car maintenance programs.
