How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack liners in sturdy corrugated boxes with internal blocking and VCI wrap to prevent steel-on-steel abrasion and rust during transit.
- Label each carton with NMFC 166970, item name, piece count, and weight; keep single cartons under 50 lb for hand-load lanes, or palletize multiple light cartons.
- Separate machined faces with chipboard or foam sheets, and band similar sizes together inside the box to stop shifting on rough LTL cross-docks.
- On the BOL, request Class 70 simple rating; example: 12 boxes, 480 lb, Class 70, NMFC 166970, steel railway parts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating streamlines quotes and prevents costly reclass fees on steel railway spares.
- Boxed presentation fits carrier conveyors and minimizes damage claims versus loose metal parts, lowering total landed cost.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges or paperwork delays.
- Standardized NMFC code supports repeat ordering for MRO and capital projects at depots, improving rate benchmarking and budgeting.
