How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 167090 and Class 100 on the BOL, and specify the package type (boxed or crated) for journal lubricators used on rail cars or locomotives.
- Prep each unit: drain any residual oil, cap/plug all ports, wrap threaded fittings, and bag loose hardware. Example: bolt a 45‑lb cast body to a wood base or foam cradle to prevent shear damage.
- Use double-wall cartons with dense foam or a wood crate with blocking and lag bolts. Strap to a pallet, keep within footprint, and mark orientation/center of gravity.
- Plan LTL moves with minimal touches; request non-stack cones or corner posts if needed. Take photos at shipper dock for claim protection; item is non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass risk for rail maintenance shipments.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and paperwork, accelerating pickups and transits.
- Proper boxing/crating limits impact to housings and brackets, lowering damage claims and warranty exposure.
- Accurate NMFC usage improves carrier acceptance, cuts administrative disputes, and keeps rail shop schedules on track.
