How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle each log bunk or pair with steel banding over wood dunnage; keep stack height manageable (under 48 in) for standard LTL handling.
- Palletize or skid-mount the bunks with 4x4 runners for fork access; cap sharp edges and stake-pocket brackets with edge guards to prevent punctures.
- Document clearly on the BOL: NMFC 167070, Class 50, piece count, and any separate hardware kits (chains, brackets) in a small crate labeled to match.
- For lengths exceeding 96 in, schedule carriers that accept long freight and note required side or end loading; mark lift points or center of gravity on each unit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 on durable steel bunks yields competitive cost per CWT, ideal for heavy, compact components.
- Fixed class (not density-based) speeds quoting and reduces reclass disputes, improving billing accuracy.
- Consolidating multiple bunks and hardware under one NMFC streamlines paperwork and can lower minimum charges.
- Proper bundling and clear lift markings cut damage risk and accessorials like detention or rehandling.
