How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize packaged pads flat and square; use slip sheets or kraft liners between layers to prevent sticking if asphalt content softens in heat.
- Band and stretch-wrap bundles with edge protectors so rubber/fabric edges don’t creep or deform during transit; avoid overhang beyond the pallet deck.
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 167140 and Class 60; include piece count and package type (cartons or wrapped bundles) for smooth LTL handling.
- Keep loads dry and cool before pickup; asphalt–fabric composites can tack under high temps. Example: store in shade, then ship on a 48x40 pallet for rail yard deliveries.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass exposure, stabilizing LTL budgets for rail maintenance supply chains.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork, accelerating pickups and terminal transfers.
- Package-friendly handling lowers damage risk on rubber/fabric composites, cutting claims and replacement costs.
- Accurate NMFC usage (167140) improves carrier compliance, helping secure consistent rates and predictable transit in Railway Group lanes.
