How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify NMFC 167230, Class 100, and non-hazardous on the BOL to prevent reclass fees and keep quotes aligned with carrier tariffs.
- Choose packaging by configuration: double-wall boxes for single racks with foam and edge guards, or wood crates with internal blocking for multi-rack sets or long spans.
- Immobilize mounting feet and brackets with bracing; bag loose hardware and label each rack section (left/right, aisle/window) to simplify receiving at depots or coach shops.
- Mark orientation and handling: use corner protectors, add “Do Not Stack” if cartons cannot bear load, and indicate center of gravity on longer crated assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and quoting, enabling predictable LTL costs for rail OEMs, refurbishers, and transit authorities.
- Boxed or crated packaging reduces damage on delicate mounting points, lowering claims and speeding repairs or refits.
- Clear NMFC mapping minimizes inspection delays and reclass charges, improving on-time delivery to rail yards and MRO facilities.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, supporting tighter project budgets and timelines.
