How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Put NMFC 167350 and Class 50 on the BOL; list the exact count of braces, chairs, guards, joints, yokes, or clips and the total pallet weight.
- Stack and nest parts to reduce voids, then band with steel strapping and corner protectors onto 4‑way pallets; add dunnage so no piece overhangs.
- For pickup, specify forklift handling and no liftgate due to weight; request appointments at rail yards or fabricators to avoid detention.
- In transit, block and brace heavy bundles; avoid double‑stacking unless the top surface is flat and rated; label with “iron/steel track hardware.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Locked-in Class 50 yields lower LTL rates for dense iron/steel hardware, improving cost per pound.
- Single NMFC covers multiple track fittings, reducing reclass charges and administrative back-and-forth.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and speeds tendering, shortening lead times on maintenance or construction projects.
- Palletized, banded bundles load quickly, cut handling touches, and lower damage risk—fewer claims and predictable schedules.
