How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bolt the base or mounting plate to a sturdy skid or steel pallet; block throw handles, lock rods, and any signal masts so nothing shifts in transit.
- Detach fragile signal heads or indicator targets when possible; wrap each with foam, box them, and strap the crate to the same pallet for a single handling unit.
- Seal electrical housings with moisture barrier and cap conduit entries; run steel bands through frame points, not over gear cases or hand levers.
- Mark center of gravity and Do Not Stack; list weights and lift points on the BOL to guide yard cranes and MOW crews during loading.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 85 yields predictable LTL pricing for rugged mechanical assemblies that mix electrical and signaling components.
- Accurate NMFC use reduces reclass charges and disputes, especially when units are skid-mounted and properly crated.
- Damage prevention steps protect locking mechanisms and signal gear, cutting claim costs and avoiding track outage delays.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and paperwork, accelerating tendering and keeping rail maintenance budgets on track.
