How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle sheet-steel pans flat on a pallet with banding and edge protectors; add fiberboard or plywood sheets between layers to prevent warping and gouging.
- Separate back flashing from pans or sleeve it with VCI paper so sharp edges do not scratch mating pieces or remove coatings during transit.
- Mark the BOL with “NMFC 167560 – Refrigerator Car Bunker Floor Pans and Back Flashing, Sheet Steel; Class 70” to avoid density disputes or reclass.
- For long or irregular flashing, use a crate or custom skid with blocking to stop slide-through; keep fork access clear to prevent bend damage at pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 with no density calculation speeds quoting and reduces reweigh/reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous railcar parts open a wider carrier pool and minimize paperwork delays.
- Consistent classing for sheet-steel components stabilizes LTL rates across lanes and seasons.
- Clear NMFC alignment cuts claim risk on high-edge, bend-prone parts, saving replacement and downtime costs for railcar shops.
