How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Separate and label KD components by kit: masts, arms, LED heads, visors, and control cabinets. Include a bill of materials and serials in a waterproof pouch.
  2. Protect optics and electronics first. Wrap lenses and LED heads with foam, cap connectors, and place boards in ESD bags before crating or palletizing.
  3. Bundle long masts and arms to a pallet with blocking and steel/poly banding; keep zero overhang and mark lengthwise orientation for carrier handling.
  4. Ship control cabinets upright on skids with shock/tilt indicators. Zip-tie internal harnesses, and note “KD signal set—deliver together” on the BOL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 simplifies quotes across LTL carriers—no density math or reclass surprises.
  • KD packaging lowers cubic footprint versus assembled signals, reducing freight spend and accessorials.
  • Purpose-built packing reduces transit damage, avoiding costly field outages and technician call-backs.
  • Clear NMFC alignment for railway signals cuts dispute risk, accelerates claims, and improves delivery SLAs.
