How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL as “Railway Snow Plows, KD – Class 85” and list component types (moldboards, cutting edges, frames) with part numbers for traceable receiving.
- Package KD parts on robust pallets or in crates: cap sharp blade edges, use corner/edge protectors, band with steel or heavy poly strapping, and prevent overhang.
- Plan handling at rail yards or maintenance depots: ensure forklift access or crane rigging points, note long segments, and request limited-access or appointment services if needed.
- Stabilize heavy steel items with blocking and bracing inside crates; label center of gravity and add “Do Not Stack” cones for long or delicate assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and reduces reclass disputes, cutting surprise accessorials and claim friction.
- KD status packs tighter than assembled plows, lowering cubic footage and improving LTL cost per component.
- Faster quoting and booking since density and dimensions aren’t required for the classification, streamlining operations.
- Non-hazardous status minimizes documentation and speeds yard-to-depot transfers, keeping track maintenance schedules on time.
