How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Put NMFC 168000 on the BOL for iron or steel switch points and switch stands, whether loose, paired, or assembled.
- Palletize or crate long point rails; block and crib the tips, cap sharp ends, and band with steel strap so nothing overhangs the skid.
- List total weight and the single longest piece length; many LTL carriers assess overlength at 96 inches+, so plan packaging to minimize protrusion.
- For stands with linkages or gearboxes, lock moving parts, protect exposed shafts, and mark “Do Not Stack” if mechanisms sit above deck height.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 means predictable rating with no density disputes, lowering the chance of reclass and surprise fees.
- Clear NMFC usage streamlines quotes and carrier onboarding, speeding up procurement for track maintenance and capital projects.
- Rugged packaging for heavy iron and steel reduces cross-dock damage, protecting precision-ground point tips and stand mechanisms.
- Standardized skids and banded bundles load faster, improving dock turn times and cutting detention and handling costs.
