How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Unitize targets flat on a pallet with edge guards and steel banding; avoid overhang. Example: stack 10 per layer with slip sheets to prevent metal-on-metal scuffing.
- Protect against rust and scratches using VCI paper or film and corner protection. Mark gross weight on two sides for safe forklift handling.
- List the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Switch Targets, railway track, iron or steel – NMFC 168020, Class 50.” Include piece count and pallet/crate type.
- Block and brace inside crates to stop plate shift during cross-dock transfers. Provide four-way pallet entry to speed LTL handling and reduce damage risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 50 rating simplifies quoting and often reduces LTL charges versus density-based items.
- Non-hazardous iron/steel parts avoid hazmat fees and specialized paperwork, accelerating tender and pickup.
- Simple, durable packaging lowers claim exposure during rail-yard resupply cycles and cross-dock touches.
- Consolidating small, heavy components into unit loads hits minimums efficiently, cutting per-target freight cost.
