How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle and brace components: pair point and closure rails on timber skids, cap sharp switch points, add edge guards, and band tightly with steel strapping.
- Select mode by length and weight: use pallets or steel racks for LTL when pieces meet carrier length limits; choose flatbed or partial truckload for long frogs or full switch assemblies.
- Document clearly on the BOL: note NMFC 168040, Class 50, non-hazardous; label each handling unit with piece count, weight, and center-of-gravity arrows for safe lifts.
- Plan loading for integrity: keep heavy cast frogs low and centered, avoid stacking on delicate points, and ensure fork access on at least two sides or provide lift eyes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 50 eliminates density disputes and reduces costly reclass or reweigh adjustments.
- Faster quoting and booking: a single NMFC for iron/steel track switches streamlines bids, paperwork, and carrier acceptance.
- Lower LTL spend versus higher-class fabrications: Class 50 often yields better per-pound rates when packaged on skids or in crates.
- Fewer damage claims: proper blocking, banding, and edge protection help prevent bent points or cracked frogs, avoiding delays and replacements.
