How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the longest stick or coil diameter and length, including any caps or protruding ties, to determine whether your rattan falls at Class 70 or 85.
- Bundle similar-diameter canes tightly with cross-ties every 12–18 inches; wrap with kraft paper or stretch film to prevent snagging and fiber fray during LTL handling.
- Protect ends with tubes or corner boards and use strapping over edge protectors; avoid bending long poles that could exceed carrier length limits or trigger fees.
- Label as “Rattan—Bundles” with piece count and dimensions on two sides; add simple handling notes like “Do Not Fork Overhead” to reduce puncture and crush risks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-sizing lengths and bundle dimensions can keep shipments in the lower end of Class 70–85, directly reducing LTL rates and avoiding overlength surcharges.
- Clear, dimension-based classification simplifies quoting and prevents reclass fees, improving margin predictability for importers and furniture manufacturers using cane stock.
- Tight bundling and end protection cut OS&D claims, preserving material yield for weaving operations and reducing replacement purchases.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping you hit production timelines without special compliance steps.
