How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the full packaged length, width, and height of each package. For bundles or tubes, include end caps and protective pads in your dimensions.
- Choose packaging that manages length: coil fine reeds into sturdy cartons to reduce overall length, or ship straight splints in rigid fiber tubes to prevent bowing.
- Protect from crush and moisture: use heavy-wall cartons or tubes, sealed end caps, a plastic liner or kraft wrap, and clear “Do Not Crush” and “This End” labels.
- Document dimensions on the BOL and labels. If any piece is long and handled as a single package, notify the carrier to avoid surprise overlength fees and reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower your class when feasible by coiling reeds into compact cartons, often aligning with Class 85 instead of the higher long-item class.
- Cut damage and claims on brittle cane splints by using rigid tubes and end protection, reducing breakage costs and delays.
- Speed up rating and quoting—this item is dimension-based and non-hazardous, so no density calculations or hazmat paperwork.
- Avoid reclass and special handling charges with accurate dimensions and packaging that keeps pieces straight, supported, and within manageable lengths.
