How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density: weigh the shipment, measure the cubic feet it occupies, and use weight ÷ cubic feet to set the density-based class under NMFC Item 170.
- Pack CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, and tapes in snug inner cartons, then master-pack in rigid boxes with edge protection and void fill to prevent warped discs and cracked cases.
- Palletize uniformly—square up cartons, add a top cap, strap, and shrink wrap to protect sleeves and tape reels from moisture and shifting during LTL transit.
- Reference NMFC 168920 on the BOL and note mixed formats; review related items 168921 and 168922 for any special notes or exceptions before tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven pricing rewards tight, space-efficient packing, often lowering class and total LTL spend on heavy stacks of discs.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding retail replenishment and catalog shipments.
- Accurate NMFC citation cuts reclass fees and inspections, improving quote-to-invoice match and protecting margins for e-commerce orders.
- Standardized box sizes improve pallet yield and reduce damage, lowering claim rates and replacement costs for high-volume titles.
