Notes

Note 168942: NOTE-Applies only on: (1) scraps, shavings or pieces of recorded or blank plastic, sound recording discs without metal coating; OR (2) whole, scrap, plastic, sound recording discs without metal coating, recorded or blank, having value only for reclamation of raw materials, actual value not exceeding 16 cents per pound. Shipping containers must be marked by shipper, 'Scrap Recordings' or 'Scrap Recording Blanks,' as the case may be, and shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment that the sound recording discs have value only for reclamation of raw materials and that the actual value per pound does not exceed 16 cents. If the shipper fails to provide such certification, item 168910, naming 'Discs, sound recording, plastic,' will apply.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package scrap discs in sturdy double-wall boxes; if using bags or drums per the item note, line them to contain chips and label as plastic media scrap.
  2. Nest discs flat to reduce voids and edge damage; do not mix with metal binders, cases, or e-waste to keep the NMFC description accurate.
  3. Palletize tight: fill boxes fully, add corner/edge boards, band and stretch-wrap; mark the BOL with “NMFC 168940, Class 50 – Scrap Plastic Sound Recording Discs.”
  4. For bulk cleanouts (e.g., a label or library), keep pallets dry and covered; weigh accurately—class is fixed, but weight still drives LTL cost.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 with no density rule streamlines quoting and reduces reclass disputes.
  • Non-hazardous commodity avoids hazmat fees and minimizes carrier restrictions.
  • Packaging flexibility (bags, boxes, or drums) lowers material costs and speeds warehouse clear-outs.
  • Ideal for recyclers and consolidations from studios or archives, enabling cheaper per-pickup rates and simpler contracts.
