Notes

Note 168956: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property or the value group embracing the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack cassettes snugly in rigid, double‑wall cartons; stand tapes upright to protect reel edges and fill voids with kraft paper to stop movement.
  2. Palletize cartons with no overhang on 4‑way pallets; add corner boards and tight stretch wrap, and avoid metal strapping that can crush box edges.
  3. Keep loads away from magnets and heat sources; maintain moderate temperatures in transit and request light top‑stacking or a top sheet to prevent crush.
  4. Document format and count clearly (e.g., 12 cartons VHS, recorded); label cartons as Recording Media and include orientation arrows if reels could shift.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Non‑hazardous media opens broader carrier options and avoids hazmat fees.
  • Standard boxed packaging streamlines quoting and reduces reclass or rebill risk.
  • Damage control through proper cartonization and palletizing cuts claims and reship costs.
  • Clear item detail (format, recorded status) speeds hub screening and reduces delays.
