How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify if you’re moving empty reels or reels wound with product; select the product’s NMFC (e.g., cable, wire, hose) rather than a generic reel entry.
- Measure flange diameter, reel width, and core size, then capture the full palletized footprint and height to avoid oversize or cubic minimum charges.
- Secure reels by banding or bolting to pallets or crate bases; add edge protectors on flanges and block the core to prevent unwinding during transit.
- Mark center of gravity and any no‑stack instructions; request appropriate handling (forks, side-load, liftgate) when reels are heavy or lack fork pockets.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct identification minimizes reclass and rebill risk when carriers expect the product’s NMFC, reducing surprise fees and disputes.
- Durable packaging for flanges and cores cuts damage claims and return costs, while palletized reels speed up loading and pickup turnaround.
- Accurate dimensions and weight help secure better LTL rates and prevent oversize and cubic minimum charges on large-diameter reels.
- Clear non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, improving schedule reliability and transit times.
