Notes
Note 169271: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product qualifies: liquid/non-gaseous refrigerants not requiring DOT hazard labels. Check the SDS and review NMFC Notes 169271 and 169272 before booking.
- Package liquids in sealed inner containers inside strong boxes; add liners and absorbent pads. Example: four 1-gal jugs bagged, cushioned, and labeled upright.
- If using cylinders or drums, cap valves, protect closures, and secure on a pallet. Keep all pieces upright, shrink-wrap, and strap to avoid movement and leaks.
- Print the BOL with “NMFC 169270, Class 70,” include the specific refrigerant name (e.g., HFO/HFC blend, non-gas), and note “Non-hazardous—no placard required.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoids hazmat surcharges and limited-carrier restrictions by shipping as non-hazardous, reducing total landed cost.
- Fixed Class 70 provides predictable rating across lanes, improving budgeting and freight quote accuracy.
- Proper inner-container boxing minimizes leakage and OS&D risk, lowering claims exposure and reclass fees.
- Flexible packaging (boxed inner containers or compliant cylinders/drums) fits standard LTL networks and speeds tender-to-pickup cycles.
