How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the mesh: wire (stainless, carbon) or synthetic (nylon, polyester), note reel dimensions (flange diameter, width, core ID) and list “Bolting or Scalping, NOI” with NMFC 169070 on the BOL.
- Palletize reels in cradles or chocks to prevent telescoping; run two straps through the arbor and two over the flanges so the load can’t roll or shift during LTL handling.
- Guard the edges and surface: use edge protectors, kraft or VCI paper for metal mesh, then stretch-wrap and cap the core ends to keep moisture and dust out.
- Mark handling clearly: “Do Not Lift By Flange,” up-arrows, and non-stack cones if needed; for multiple reels, separate with dunnage and record each reel’s weight and mesh count for receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI identification under the Reels Group reduces reclass risk and unwanted adjustments, keeping LTL invoices predictable.
- Reel-specific blocking and edge protection cut claim rates by preventing telescoping, kinked mesh, and abrasion—preserving high-value screen media.
- Complete dimensions (OD, width, core ID) enable precise rate shopping and help avoid oversize or special-handling fees.
- Clear labeling and BOL notes speed cross-dock moves, shortening transit variability and improving on-time delivery for mills, aggregate plants, and OEMs.
