NMFC Description Class
169180.00 Lineman's, with carts:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Describe the unit on the BOL as a single assembly: lineman’s cable reel on wheeled cart, note frame material (steel/aluminum) and reel type (wood/steel), and state that the reel is immobilized.
  2. Palletize the cart when possible: chock and block wheels, engage caster locks, band the frame to a 4‑way pallet with 2 in. polyester strapping and edge protection, and secure the spindle to stop drum rotation.
  3. Measure true extremes: include handle/tongue height, hub-to-hub width, and spindle caps. Weigh the complete assembly (cart + reel + pallet) and mark center of gravity for safe fork handling.
  4. Call out accessorials early: construction site or utility yard delivery, liftgate needs, and appointment. If shipping multiple carts, strap crosswise to prevent caster swivel and add DO NOT ROLL labeling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Cleaner quotes and fewer reclasses by clearly identifying reel-on-cart equipment within the Reels Group and detailing immobilization and packaging.
  • Lower damage risk and OS&D costs through wheel chocking, spindle restraints, and banded palletization that keep heavy drums from free-spinning.
  • Faster turns at depots and jobsites by providing accurate dimensions and accessorials, reducing carrier holds and redeliveries for utility and telecom projects.
  • Predictable LTL rates across repeat shipments when packaging is standardized (same pallet footprint, banding pattern, and labeling) for every carted reel.
