How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State clearly that these are EMPTY lineman's reels (no cart, no cable) and include flange diameter, drum width, and arbor hole size to help carriers plan deck space.
- Palletize each reel: block the hub with lumber, chock the flanges, then through-bolt or band the drum to the pallet. Add edge protectors and wrap to prevent flange scuffing.
- Mark as non-stackable unless braced; if shipping multiples, separate with cross-dunnage and band together as a unit to stop rolling during LTL handling.
- Document with photos of blocking/banding and list as “Lineman's, without carts — NMFC 169200, Class N/A” on the BOL to avoid reclassification as loaded cable reels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate “without carts” identification prevents misrating as equipment or loaded reels, reducing reclass fees and unexpected accessorials.
- Palletized, hub-blocked reels cut damage risk to flanges and drums, lowering OS&D claims and keeping utility crews supplied on schedule.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving LTL rate shopping and transit flexibility.
- Clear specs (flange diameter, weight, count) speed quotes and tendering, helping procurement lock in better freight rates and predictable budgeting.
