How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify your product fits the NOI description for prepared composition roofing and is not better covered by Notes items 170162, 170164, or 170166. Use NMFC 170160 when no more specific listing applies.
- For boxed freight: choose double‑wall cartons with edge protectors, place cartons tightly on a 48x40 pallet, add two perpendicular steel or poly bands, and stretch‑wrap to prevent shifting. Avoid pallet overhang.
- For crated freight: block and brace panels inside the crate to stop slide, add skids with 4-way forklift access, and band the crate to the pallet. Mark "Do Not Stack" if edges are brittle.
- On the BOL, state “NMFC 170160, Class 55, non-hazardous,” include piece and packaging counts (boxes or crates), and note pallet quantity. No density entry is required for this simple class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at Class 55 for dense, durable roofing goods, helping contractors and distributors budget more accurately.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and carrier acceptance, reducing compliance steps and potential accessorial slowdowns.
- Clear NOI coverage for boxes and crates minimizes reclassifications and inspections, cutting admin time and dispute risk.
- Crate or reinforced box packaging lowers damages on heavy, abrasive materials, reducing claim costs and delivery delays.
