How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 170215, Class 50 for packaged steel roofing sheets—corrugated or flat, plain, galvanized, primed, painted, or terne/tin coated.
- Write “Steel roofing, packaged, NMFC 170215, Class 50” on the BOL; include bundle count and weights. Density is not required for this item.
- Bundle tightly with steel banding and edge guards; add skids or runners for forklift entry to prevent scuffing coated surfaces.
- Keep panel lengths uniform and dry; avoid mixed-metal bundles and use wrap or covers to limit moisture spotting on primed or painted panels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low, predictable Class 50 can unlock competitive LTL rates for heavy roofing loads.
- Accurate NMFC use prevents costly reclasses and disputes over ‘sheet steel’ vs ‘roofing’ descriptions.
- Package-focused prep reduces edge dings and coating rub, lowering claims and jobsite delays.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat-related surcharges.
