How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Roofing, zinc, corrugated, NMFC 170250, Class 70, non-haz” and include bundle or crate counts for quick check-in.
- Use edge guards, interleaving sheets, and tight steel or poly banding on bundles to prevent scuffing and panel drift in transit.
- For boxes or crates, block and brace panels so ribs cannot crush; add moisture barriers or VCI paper if shipping through humid or coastal lanes.
- Load bundles long-side to the trailer when possible and avoid stacking on sharp edges; request a flat, clean pallet deck or dunnage contact points.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density calculation delays or reclass risk for standard LTL moves.
- Proper bundling or crating cuts denting and abrasion, reducing OS&D claims and return costs for contractors and distributors.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds quoting and carrier acceptance, shortening lead times to job sites and metal roofing fabricators.
- Accurate packaging selection (bundle vs. crate) optimizes accessorial exposure and helps maintain better freight rates over time.
