Notes

Note 170552: NOTE-Also applies on aluminum molding, tin roofing caps, metal or wooden fastenings, nails or roofing cement, NOI, not exceeding 10 percent of the weight of the shingles or siding.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 170550 on the BOL and describe as “asphalt composition shingles, packaged.” If your shipment varies from standard bundles, review Note item 170552 for any exceptions.
  2. Palletize bundles tightly with slip sheets, corner/edge protectors, and two-way banding. Keep bundles flush with the pallet and avoid overhang so forklift tines don’t chip shingle edges.
  3. Weatherproof the unit: maintain the factory wrap, add stretch film and a top sheet. Shingles resist water, but wet cardboard shrouds fail—keep bundles dry during cross-dock transfers.
  4. Load heavy and low. Do not double-stack unless the manufacturer allows it and the pallet is braced. Verify pallet weight against carrier limits and ensure stable centers of gravity during handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating at Class 55 reduces reclass risk and keeps LTL quotes consistent across carriers.
  • Packaged-only classification supports dense pallet builds, improving cube efficiency and lowering per-bundle freight cost.
  • Clear, non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and shortens transit time in storm-recovery or rush replenishment cycles.
  • Using the correct NMFC and packaging guidance cuts damages and claims, protecting margins for distributors and roofing contractors.
