How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Put NMFC 171820 and Class 60 on the BOL, and describe the freight as “reclaimed rubber dispersion, liquid or paste” in drums or pails with hazmat indicated.
  2. Use tight-closing, UN-rated drums or pails when the SDS calls for it. Keep closures torqued, ring clamps secured, and orient all containers upright with arrow labels.
  3. Unitize: band or strap drums to pallets and stretch-wrap; nest pails in a tray or on a spill pad to capture seepage and prevent damage to neighboring freight.
  4. Provide the SDS and 24/7 emergency contact, note temperature sensitivities (e.g., protect from freezing), and book with an LTL carrier authorized for hazmat liquids.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, delivering more predictable LTL rates.
  • Standard drum/pail packaging is widely accepted and reduces leakage risk, cutting claims and reship costs.
  • Clean hazmat documentation prevents rejections, delays, and reclass fees—keeping production timelines intact.
  • Optimizing palletization (consolidating pails/drums) can lower handling charges and improve lane-level freight economics.
